Blood Donor Program

Did you know pets need blood too? Our hospital treats numerous patients throughout the year that require blood or plasma transfusions vital to their recovery process. Our hospital maintains a blood donor program that is comprised of volunteer pets. Thanks to the Blood Donors at Alta these pets have a fighting chance to overcome serious trauma or illnesses.

Reidar

Reidar, a Labrador Retriever, was born in April of 2007. He was adopted by his current owner several months later while he was battling a life threatening illness. Thank goodness he recovered completely! Now he loves playing Frisbee and running and hiking in the mountains. He even carries his own water and treats in a doggie backpack on long trips! Reidar began donating blood in 2009 at Alta Animal Hospital.

Lily

Lily, an American Staffordshire Terrier, was adopted as a puppy from an Oregon animal shelter in 2003.  She has traveled up and down the West Coast, finally settling in Idaho in 2010. She officially began her career as a donor over Memorial Day weekend, 2011. Lily's unique blood type (Universal Donor) means she can safely donate blood to any canine patient in need. While Lily loves to hike and camp with her owners, she is most likely to be found in her favorite sunbathing spot or spending quality time with her toy pig, Omelette.

Nesseh - Retired

Nesseh, a Lab mix, was just shy of a year old when she was adopted from an Idaho anima shelter in 1997. She spent the next four years living in Colorado. It was there she was discovered to have the Universal Donor blood type! She moved back to Idaho in 2001 and began her “career” as a donor at Alta Animal Hospital. Nesseh loved to go swimming, running in the mountains, and even pulling her owner on skis in the wintertime. Nesseh passed away in November 2011, just shy of her 15th Birthday. The service she provided to the hospital will always be remembered.

Dayzee - Retired

Dayzee is a pit bull mix. She had a broken leg when she was rescued by the Pocatello Animal Shelter in 2007. Her fracture was repaired by the veterinarians at Alta Animal Hospital and she was adopted into her current home. Dayzee loved jumping on the trampoline at home, sleeping on the bed, and her favorite treat was watermelon. She donated blood for the first time at Alta in 2008. Dayzee is a Universal Donor meaning, her fairly rare blood type can be transfused safely into any dog in need! Dayzee was retired in 2010, and has since passed away. The staff at Alta Animal Hospital appreciated Dayzee’s service she provided while she was an active blood donor.
